Karina Association
The Karina Association is a young non- profit centered in Timonium, Maryland. The mission of Karina is to improve the quality of life of children and young adults with special needs by raising public awareness of their needs and providing them with professional expressive arts services and advocacy. My responsibilities within Karina were to run social media such as Facebook, contact potential donors and sponsors, and to work directly with the clents in herapy settings. This internship provided me with insight into the inner management of non- profits and I still continue to refer families to Karina for assistance, as well as try and provide publicity outlets for the organization as I move throught the non- profit community.
Field Experience
In the section below, I will be describing the three major projects I have worked on and completed in the fields of human services, non- profit management, and law. Each of these activites has given me irreplaceacle experience that I would have been hard pressed to acquire otherwise.
When: May 2013- December 2013
When:
August 2013- March 2014
The Center for Remarkable Women
For my FMST 387 class, my group was assigned to work with The Center for Remarkable Women in Pikesville, Maryland. We had no idea what this experience was going to be like, so we drove to their site to get a feel for where we would be working. What we found when we arrived would horrify us. There was an old building with no pont on the walls. It appeared that nobody was even in the buidling. We immeditly went to our professor with concerns and she informed us that the group had recently moved into a new location and we should give it a chance. After we spoke with the founder and the renovations were complete, we saw that CRW was heading in a good direction. CRW provides guidance and empowerment to women going through challenging times in thier lives. For CRW we organized a silent auction to be held at their annual luncheon at Turf Valley. We went to local businesses to garner support, created a QR code to help with collecting donations, and even acquired air time advertising on the radio. We were able to collect donations in excess of $1500 in a short span of time.
When:
May 2014- September 2014
The Law Offices of Carl Gold Esq.
When I first met Carl as my Family Law professor, I knew he was passionate and excited about helping others and trying to do as much as he could for the people around him. He would always come to class with a provocative quote that would set the tone for the conversation the class would engage in for the next three hours. I had always had an interest in the law, but did not know what direction to head with it, as I did not aspire to become a large corporate lawyer. I decided I had found a potential mentor in Carl, and I would ask if I could learn under him for the up coming summer. Carl gladly accepted and I began working with him. Early on he established his mission statement would be "have fun, help people, and don't work too hard." Kayaking and hiking trips would be an essential part of the internship experience as he would test my mind, body, and spirit. As important as work is, taking care of yourself is also important. Carl has been a lawyer for over thirty years, and he has spent many of his early years working tirelessly to gain the respect and admiration of his colleagues, but as he gained this experience he learned you need to maintain all aspects of your health to be happy. One issue I have had throughout my college career is personal care, and not always prioritizing work ahead of everything else. Working with Carl has helped me to develop the skills necessary to develop a healthy lifestyle that also allows me to work hard at my given fields, while learning valuable legal knowledge.
